6. What is the federal flammability standard for upholstered furniture?
Under the COVID-19 Regulatory Relief and Work From Home Safety Act, all upholstered furniture manufactured, imported, or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021 must comply with 16 CFR Part 1640, which incorporates California Technical Bulletin 117‑2013 as the federal standard.
The TB 117‑2013 test evaluates the smolder resistance of materials used in upholstered furniture, protecting against hazards associated with smoldering ignition from cigarettes or similar ignition sources.
7. Do your sofas have the required flammability label?
Yes. All our retro leather sofas bear a permanent label with the exact required wording:
"Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability."
The label is conspicuous, legible, and permanently affixed (typically stapled to the wooden frame under the dust cover or sewn into the fabric). This label may also serve as the California TB 117‑2013 label.
8. What are the lead content requirements for furniture?
Under 16 CFR Part 1303, any paint or similar surface coating on furniture must not contain lead exceeding 90 ppm. This applies to any painted components on your sofa (metal legs, decorative trim, finished wood parts).
9. What are the FTC requirements for labeling "leather" furniture?
We comply with the FTC Guides for Select Leather and Imitation Leather Products (16 CFR Part 24) .
-
"Leather" used alone means the product is composed entirely of leather (excluding minor non‑leather components).
-
"Genuine leather" indicates real leather, but may be of lower quality than top‑grain or full‑grain.
-
"Bonded leather" must be clearly labeled as such, with percentage of leather fibers disclosed.
-
"Faux leather," "PU leather," or "vegan leather" must not be deceptively described as genuine leather.
10. What is the formaldehyde requirement for composite wood components?
If any composite wood components (MDF, particleboard) are used in your sofa frames or trim, they comply with CARB ATCM Phase 2 (40 CFR Part 770) formaldehyde emissions standards (≤0.05 ppm).
11. Do your sofas require a General Certificate of Conformity (GCC)?
Yes. As general‑use products (not intended for children 12 and under), we provide a General Certificate of Conformity (GCC) available upon request, certifying compliance with 16 CFR Part 1640 (flammability), 16 CFR Part 1303 (lead in coatings), and CARB ATCM Phase 2.
12. How do I care for my retro leather sofa?
-
Dust and wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
-
Use a leather conditioner every 6‑12 months to prevent drying and cracking.
-
Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent fading and drying.
-
